Prolonged Grief Therapy

What is Prolonged grief therapy?

PGT (Prolonged Grief Therapy) is an evidence based therapy which was informed by foundational theories and research on the science of loss and grief.

PGT is designed to last around 16 structured sessions to meet you where you are in your experience of grief. This therapy has been demonstrated to strengthen your ability to manage emotional pain, think about the future, reinforce relationships with others, tell the story of the death, live with reminders of the loss, and maintain strong connection with the deceased.

You can read more about PGT here or contact us for a visit.

Prolonged grief after perinatal loss

Perinatal loss (for example: loss of a pregnancy, termination for medical reasons, stillbirth, death of an infant) can be devastating and cause intense grief.

For many people, this grief does not ease over time and may become what is termed Prolonged Grief Disorder. Instead of decreasing over time, emotions remain intense and disabling with near daily intense yearning and preoccupation with thoughts or memories of the loss.

People struggling with this kind of grief may continue to feel

  • A sense of disbelief
  • Driven to avoid reminders
  • Intense emotional pain
  • Difficulty returning to people and activities that were important to them
  • Emotional numbness
  • Meaninglessness
  • Intense loneliness
  • That a part of themself has died
